If Celia Cruz (rest in
peace) was known as the "Queen of Salsa", Gloria Estefan
would probably be considered the Queen of modern Pop-Latin crossover.
A prolific composer and vocalist, Gloria Estefan's
music pioneered
the unique contemporary crossover Miami sound that is the catalyst
of today's mainstream tropical Pop Latin flavor as her music
has inspired millions of people worldwide. In short, her extraordinary
talent helped pave the way for other contemporary superstars--including
the late great Selena, also Ricky Martin, Thalia, Jenifer Lopez,
Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, La India,
Shakira, and many others.
Although her accomplishments
as a musician and as a human being are far too many to recount
in this short essay, perhaps at this time it is too soon to measure
her musical talent and personality with other legendary divas
of Latin music such as Graciela (vocalist with the famed Machito
& his Afro-Cubans orchestra), Olga Gillot, La Lupe and the
larger-than-life "Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz, who recently
died. Nonetheless, history will most certainly tell (if not already)
that Gloria is one of the great ones.
To a great extent, it is
not difficult to discern Gloria's personal character as an artist
and role model. One only has to read the lyrics of her songs.
These carefully crafted lyrics reflect a deep love for the art
of music, a message of love, hope, happiness, make you dance,
shed some tears, joyful feelings, inspiration, empowering women,
Latinos and everyone to "Get on Your Feet" and make
it happen.
We are very pleased to
honor one of the greatest musicians in the history of contemporary
popular Latin music by presenting the lyrics to some of her most
notable songs. Follow the links and enjoy!
