When it comes to the pure sound of salsa, there's
no doubt that a beautiful little island in the Caribbean namely
Puerto Rico has giving birth to some of the greatest exponents
of this genre. One such luminary musician is singer Cheo Feliciano.
This CD, "Cheo Feliciano-The Best"
on Vaya Records is a compilation of his work, showcasing his
unique style of delivering Cuban-based sones as well as memorable
boleros. Perhaps in that sense, Feliciano is in a class of his
own as few Latin popular singers of his generation were as proficient
going from faster tempo salsa dance music to slow boleros with
amazing style and grace as did Cheo.
The CD includes some of his best work
also performed with the Fania Allstars. This music defines a
time where Latin dance music was evolving. All the arrangements
are truly exquisite featuring his trademark brass section of
multiple trombones, flute, flugal horn and string ensemble.
For those who enjoy the romantic sounds
of Bolero, it features such classic tunes as the Bobby Capo composition
"Juguete", Portillo De La Luz' composition "Delirio"
and Contigo En La Distancia", including one of his biggest
all-time hit songs, a Jose Noriega composition entitled "Amada
Mia." Another Noriega composition, one of the tastiest salsa
arrangements ever recorded, "Castillos De Arena" captures
Feliciano in top form.
Unfortunately, when it comes to this
particular CD, the liner notes of this reissue compilation do
not credit the musicians who recorded the tunes, much less perhaps
its greatest asset: the arranger of the musical works. Regardless,
this CD is a gem and it is highly recommended for music fans
who enjoy the "old school" vintage sound of salsa.
As Cheo is famous for saying: "Oye
familia!" ((hey, family!), as he constantly refers to his
many music fans at live concerts, and heard throughout this recording:
enjoy!
