Best Latin Music
Repertoire
Determining what Latin music
to add to your repertoire can be a daunting task. In part, the
decision may be determined by answering this important question:
What kind of events and/or places does your band perform at.
For instance, if your band
performs mainly in private functions like weddings, you would
need a variety repertoire that includes many kinds of Latin rhythms
like: salsa, cumbia, merengue, as well as music from Central
and South America.
If your band performs mostly
in Latin dance nightclubs, it is mostly expected that you would
perform popular salsa and merengue cover tunes. The best way
to get a handle on what's popular is to turn on your the radio
and tune in to a Latin music station. Listen for several weeks
and get familiar with the music and the artists. If there's no
local Latin radio in your area, go on the Internet and research
the playlists of radio stations located in large Latin populated
cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami (FL), New York City,
etc.
If your band caters to a hardcore
Latin salsa and merengue dance crowd, here are some recommendations
of famous Latin artists whose music would be ideal in building
a world class cover repertoire: Celia Cruz (salsa), Thalia (Latin
pop), El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico (salsa), Gilberto Santa Rosa
(salsa), Frankie Ruiz (salsa), Los Hermanos Rosario (merengue),
Wilfredo Vargas (merengue), La Makina (merengue), Oro Solido
(merengue), Gloria Estefan (Latin pop), Elvis Crespo (merengue),
Carlos Vives (vallenato), Willy Chirino (salsa), Oscar D'Leon
(salsa), Joe Arroyo (salsa), Grupo Niche (salsa), Victor Manuel
(salsa), among others.
If your band performs mostly
at corporate functions (not necessarily a dance crowd), incorporating
a Latin Jazz repertoire is highly recommended--including the
mambo and cha cha cha from the repertoire of Perez Prado and
Tito Puente; bossa nova classics like Wave and the Girl From
Ipanema by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Also, don't forget to add some
classic boleros like "Como Fue", Sabor A Mi",
"Contigo En La Distancia" and many others.
