Latin Vocals

A key component in organizing a Latin salsa band is choosing its repertoire. Unless the music will be all instrumental, the first step is to collaborate with your male and/or female vocalist to determine what songs he/she is interested in singing, and also making sure the tunes will be arranged in the right key signature for that vocalist.

If you choose to perform cover tunes, there's plenty of examples. If your band features a female vocalist, some examples include music from Celia Cruz, Thalia, Olga Tanon, Selina, Shakira, Gloria Estefan, and La Lupe. However, there's a lot more music available for male vocalists--including music from Oscar D'Leon, Grupo Niche, Johnny Ventura, Elvis Crespo, Ricky Martin, El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico, Marc Anthony, Frankie Ruiz, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Joe Arroyo, Eddie Santiago and many more.

Much of the Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Poncho Sanchez repertoire is great Latin Jazz. Also highly recommend the music of Santana. For the more traditional Cuban standards, check out the music of Benny More, Jose Fajardo, Johhny Pacheco, Perez Prado and Arsenio Rodriguez.

Do some research by purchasing the CDs of some of the artists mentioned above. This will help you better define and tailor the best repertoire for your band.
